Every serious thing a parent cares about has an instrument. The pediatrician has a growth chart. The school has a report card. The optometrist has a chart on the wall with letters that get smaller. A parent raising a child in the faith has no instrument at all — just material, and no way to find out whether any of it reached the person it was aimed at.
